Wylde Green Primary School

A new outdoor classroom block

Ref: ED31

We were asked to create a bespoke teaching space for Year Six pupils at Wylde Green Primary School in Birmingham. The brief was to include two equal 52m² sized rooms, in addition to a lobby and entrance area. This tailor-made building was designed to provide an inspiring learning environment amongst natural surroundings.

Client Brief

With a main building that originally dates back to 1840, Wylde Green is the oldest school in the city. However, a rich history certainly doesn’t mean an old-fashioned outlook, and the school was passionate about updating its facilities.

The school wanted a new bespoke classroom for its Year Six pupils, enabling the class to move out of the school hall into a dedicated teaching space. The building was designed to fulfil the school’s outdoor learning objectives, with the project representing a change of scenery for pupils and staff as well as delivering the numerous additional benefits of teaching in an outdoor classroom.

Our Solution

Wylde Green’s new teaching space was a much-needed addition to the school’s existing building, providing all the required facilities without the upheaval and cost consideration of an extension. We ensured our design was able to sit comfortably with the rest of the school’s Victorian architecture, whilst also blending naturally with the surrounding greenery.

We worked to tight budgets and timescales to ensure the build was completed by the school’s deadline. Opting for our Complete Care package meant the school team could relax as we handled everything from planning permission, right through to the handover of the keys.

Total build time 5 Weeks

The Result

The new teaching space blends perfectly with its natural surroundings, and the school staff and pupils are thrilled with the result. Former pupil and TV star Emma Willis even attended the unveiling of the new classroom with her husband Matt (of Busted fame).

The building is fabulous. The positive comments from parents and visitors confirm we chose the right design and company. The new learning spaces have inspired our children, giving them a further sense of pride in their school.
