SEN classroom

A rural teaching space for SEN (Special Educational Needs) pupils.

Ref: ED29

We created a fabulous break-out space situated within a wooden play area, fully self-contained with toilet and kitchen. This beautiful build was perfectly complemented by its surroundings; we even polished it off with a rustic meadow roof, adding to the natural habitat while helping the build to further blend in.

Client Brief

The Stable Company were asked to develop a building on a derelict piece of land that the school could use as a group teaching space for SEN students. The building had to accommodate two teaching spaces for up to 15 children in each, and further needed to have built-in facilities such as a toilet and basic kitchen due to the remoteness of the building from the main school. It was a challenge we knew we could triumph in.

Our Solution

Situated within a belt of trees, the land was prone to becoming boggy and wet in the winter months.  To overcome this, The Stable Company used a specialist foundation system, avoiding the need for concrete and protecting the ground and root systems of the trees.  The building was elevated out of the ground and access ramps used to gain entry to the building.  Internally, the building was designed with a SEN classroom either side of a central lobby.  A mini kitchen was designed within the lobby and further access was made for a toilet facility.  Externally, materials were chosen to blend with their environment, including the use of a meadow roof.  In time the meadow roof will provide a great habitat for local birds and insects.

Total build time 6 weeks on site

The Result

The result is a building that looks like its always been there.  It provides a great space for the school to use when the regular teaching spaces are fully utilised.  The final space is one of clam and quiet and really helps the students concentrate away from distractions of the main school hustle and bustle.
